Burano

Welcome to Italy in Photos, where our stunning imagery will transport you to the heart of Burano, allowing you to experience the irresistible allure and undeniable charm of this captivating destination: – Burano is a beautiful island in the Venetian Lagoon, known for its colourful houses and lace making. It is a popular tourist destination that offers a glimpse of the traditional Venetian culture and lifestyle. Here is a possible introduction to Burano Italy. – Burano is an island of colours, where every house is painted in a different shade, creating a vibrant and cheerful atmosphere. The origin of this tradition dates to the fishermen, who wanted to recognize their homes from afar when they returned from the sea. Today, the colours are regulated by the local government, and each owner must request permission before changing the hue of their facade. – Burano is also famous for its exquisite lace, which has been produced on the island since the 16th century. The lace makers use a special technique called “needle lace”, which involves stitching threads with a needle on a pattern. The lace is then cut out and detached from the fabric. Burano lace is renowned for its intricate designs and high quality, and it can be found in many shops and museums on the island. – Burano is a charming place to visit, where you can admire the architecture, the art, and the craftsmanship of the locals. You can also enjoy the delicious seafood dishes, such as the “risotto de gò”, made with a local fish called goby. Burano is easily accessible by water bus from Venice, and it takes about 45 minutes to reach it. If you are looking for a colourful and authentic experience, Burano is the perfect destination for you.

Fondamenta dei Squeri is a street in Burano that runs along the canal where the squeri, or boatyards, used to be located. Here, the local craftsmen built and repaired the traditional wooden boats of the Venetian Lagoon, such as gondolas, sandoli, and bragozzi1. Today, you can still see some of these boats moored along the canal, as well as some workshops that sell or rent them. Fondamenta dei Squeri is also a good spot to admire the colorful houses of Burano and take some photos. It is a popular spot for tourists who want to see the charming houses and boats that line the canal. Ponte – Fondamenta San Mauro means “bridge – foundation of Saint Mauro” in Italian. Saint Mauro was a bishop of Cesena who died in 946.The bridge is also known as Ponte dei Assassini, or “bridge of the assassins”, because it was the site of a bloody feud between two rival families in the 15th century. The street is one of the main routes in Burano, connecting the ferry dock with Piazza Baldassare Galuppi, the main square of the island. Along the street, you can find many shops, cafes, restaurants, and ateliers that sell local products, such as lace, glass, and pastries.(Photos 8-9) – Fondamenta degli Assassini is a street in Burano which runs from Fondamenta Pontinello Sinistra Burano to Fondamenta Pontinello Destra (Photo 10-11-12-13-14-15)

It is one of the main attractions of the island, and it has some interesting features and artworks that you can admire. The church was originally built in the 10th century, but it was rebuilt and enlarged in the 16th and 17th centuries. It was consecrated in 1645 by the bishop of Torcello1. It has a leaning bell tower, which is visible from afar. It is said that it leans because of the unstable soil of the island. The bell tower was built in 1719 and it has a height of 53 meters. The church has a single nave with six side chapels. The interior is decorated with paintings, sculptures, and stuccoes in the Baroque style. The most famous painting in the church is the Crucifixion by Giambattista Tiepolo, which is located in the presbytery. It was painted in 1727 and it is considered one of the masterpieces of the Venetian painter. The church also has a pipe organ, which was installed in 1913 by the company Mascioni. The previous organ, which was made by Callido in 1767, was destroyed by a fire in 1913. – Rio Terrà del Pizzo is a street in Burano which runs from Via Baldassarre Galuppi to Fondamenta del Pizzo (Photos 19-20)
