It is known for its ancient history, its beautiful churches, and its colourful flowers. Spello was founded by the Umbri, an ancient people who lived in this area before the Romans. The town became a Roman colony in the first century BC and was called Hispellum. You can still see some of the Roman monuments, such as the Porta Consolare, a gate with statues and a tower. Spello is also famous for its art and culture. The town has several churches that display frescoes by Pinturicchio, a renowned Renaissance painter. One of the most impressive is the Baglioni Chapel in Santa Maria Maggiore, which depicts scenes from the life of Jesus and Mary. Spello is also a paradise for flower lovers. The town is decorated with plants and flowers all year round, creating a cheerful and romantic atmosphere. Every year, in June, Spello hosts the Infiorata, a festival where the streets are covered with floral carpets made by the locals.
