Villa del Balbianello
Villa del Balbianello, situated in the charming village of Lenno on the western shore of Lake Como, is one of the most captivating and romantic villas in Italy. Nestled on the tip of the wooded peninsula of Dosso d’Avedo, it commands sweeping views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. With its elegant architecture, terraced gardens, and fascinating history, Villa del Balbianello stands as a perfect example of Italian beauty and refinement, attracting visitors from around the world who come to experience its magic.
The villa was originally built in the late 18th century on the site of a Franciscan monastery by Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini, a cultured and sophisticated man who wanted a private retreat for art, literature, and conversation. He transformed the secluded peninsula into a haven of elegance and intellectual life, hosting poets, philosophers, and artists. After the cardinal’s death, the villa passed through various owners, each adding personal touches while preserving its timeless charm.
In the 20th century, Villa del Balbianello gained new life under the ownership of Count Guido Monzino, an Italian explorer and businessman who bought it in 1974. A passionate adventurer, Monzino filled the villa with art, maps, and artifacts collected during his expeditions to the North Pole, the Himalayas, and other distant lands. He meticulously restored the property, preserving its original character while introducing elements that reflected his adventurous spirit. Upon his death in 1988, Monzino left the villa to the Fondo Ambiente Italiano (FAI), the Italian National Trust, ensuring its protection and preservation for future generations.
Today, Villa del Balbianello is open to the public and remains one of Lake Como’s most visited landmarks. Its terraced gardens are masterpieces of design, with perfectly trimmed hedges, statues, and cypress trees framing unforgettable lake views. The loggia, with arches opening on both sides, creates a stunning visual link between the two branches of Lake Como, making it a favourite spot for photographers and filmmakers alike. The villa’s beauty has captured the imagination of the film industry, serving as a setting for famous movies such as Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and Casino Royale.
A visit to Villa del Balbianello is an experience that combines history, art, nature, and romance. Whether approached by boat or along the scenic lakeside path, it embodies the grace and allure of Lake Como at its very best, a timeless jewel where elegance meets adventure.
