Welcome to Italy in Photos, a mesmerizing visual experience that unveils the hidden treasures of Isola Bella a  remarkable  island in Lake Maggiore: – Isola Bella is a small island in the Lago Maggiore, one of the largest lakes in northern Italy. The island is famous for its stunning baroque palace and garden, which were built by the noble Borromeo family in the 17th and 18th centuries. Isola Bella is a masterpiece of art, architecture, and nature, and a popular tourist attraction that offers a glimpse into the history and culture of the region. The island was originally a rocky crag inhabited by fishermen, until Carlo III Borromeo decided to transform it into a place of delights for his wife, Isabella D’Adda, in 1632. He commissioned the architect Angelo Crivelli to design a palazzo and a garden that would rival the most splendid residences in Europe. The construction was interrupted by the plague outbreak in 1630, and resumed by Carlo’s sons and nephews, who added more rooms, decorations, and plants to the island. The result was a magnificent complex that hosted many illustrious guests, such as Napoleon, Joséphine de Beauharnais, Edward Gibbon, and Caroline of Brunswick. The palazzo is a splendid example of baroque architecture, with richly decorated rooms that display paintings, tapestries, sculptures, furniture, and other artworks from various periods and styles. The most impressive rooms are the Galleria Berthier, which contains over 130 paintings by masters such as Raphael, Correggio, Titian, and Guido Reni; the Sala del Trono, which features a throne made of gilded wood and velvet⁴; the Sala delle Regine, which honours the queens who visited the island with their portraits; and the Grotte, which are artificial caves covered with shells, stones, and mirrors that create a magical marine atmosphere.

The garden is a marvel of Italian-style landscaping, with ten terraces that rise above the lake like a pyramid. The terraces are adorned with statues, obelisks, fountains, and balustrades that create a harmonious symphony of shapes and colours. The garden is also home to a variety of rare and exotic plants from different continents, such as camphor trees, giant rhubarbs, sweet osmanthus, star anise, and Mexican pines. The highest terrace is crowned by the Teatro Massimo, a circular amphitheatre that hosts musical and theatrical events. In the centre of the theatre stands the statue of the unicorn, the heraldic symbol of the Borromeo family. Isola Bella is a place of beauty and wonder that enchants visitors with its artistic and natural treasures. It is a testimony of the vision and passion of the Borromeo family, who created a unique oasis of culture and elegance in the middle of the lake. Isola Bella is not only an island, but a dream come true. Our collection of captivating photographs will transport you straight to the heart of Isola Bella, capturing the essence of this extraordinary destination.
