Centro Storico, 11014 Étroubles AO, Italy (August 2020)

Étroubles is a picturesque alpine village located in the Aosta Valley region of north-western Italy, close to the border with Switzerland. Nestled at an altitude of about 1,280 meters, it lies along the historic Great St. Bernard Pass, one of the most ancient routes connecting Italy and the rest of Europe. Surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Pennine Alps, Étroubles offers breath-taking mountain scenery, a tranquil atmosphere, and a strong sense of tradition that reflects its centuries-old history.

The village has ancient roots that trace back to Roman times when it was known as Restapolis and served as an important stop along the route to Gaul. During the Middle Ages, Étroubles became a key resting point for pilgrims and merchants traveling through the pass, including monks from the nearby Hospice of the Great St. Bernard. The historic character of the village remains visible today in its narrow stone streets, slate-roofed houses, and traditional mountain architecture. Many of the buildings have been beautifully preserved or restored, maintaining the authenticity that makes Étroubles one of the most charming villages in the Aosta Valley.

In addition to its historical appeal, Étroubles is known for its open-air museum, a unique cultural project that turns the entire village into an art gallery. Along the streets and courtyards, visitors can admire sculptures, paintings, and installations created by renowned Italian and international artists. This innovative combination of art and tradition gives the village a distinctive identity and transforms a simple stroll into an inspiring cultural experience.

Nature lovers find Étroubles an ideal destination throughout the year. In summer, the surrounding mountains offer numerous hiking and cycling trails that lead through alpine meadows, forests, and panoramic viewpoints. In winter, the area becomes a paradise for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and other snow sports, with well-maintained trails and access to nearby ski resorts. The pure mountain air and peaceful rhythm of life make it a perfect retreat for relaxation and outdoor adventure alike.

Local cuisine adds to the village’s charm, featuring the rich flavors of Aosta Valley traditions. Dishes such as polenta, local cheeses like Fontina, cured meats, and mountain honey are served in cosy restaurants and family-run inns. Étroubles embodies the harmony between history, nature, and art, offering visitors an unforgettable glimpse into authentic alpine life in northern Italy.

The Chiesa Parrocchiale di Santa Maria Assunta in Ruelle Millet, Étroubles, is a beautiful example of alpine religious architecture and a cherished symbol of local faith. Situated in the heart of the village, the church stands gracefully against the backdrop of the surrounding mountains, creating a serene and picturesque setting. Its origins date back to the medieval period, though the structure has been expanded and restored over time, preserving its historical charm while reflecting the artistic traditions of the Aosta Valley. The church is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and houses valuable works of sacred art, including wooden statues, altarpieces, and frescoes that testify to centuries of devotion. The tall bell tower, visible from different points in the village, adds to its striking presence. Beyond its architectural and artistic importance, the Chiesa Parrocchiale di Santa Maria Assunta remains a vital place of worship and community life in Étroubles.
