Torca is a charming village in southern Italy, nestled within the municipality of Massa Lubrense on the Sorrento Peninsula. Perched above the Tyrrhenian Sea, Torca offers a peaceful retreat from the more crowded tourist centres of nearby Sorrento and Positano. With its winding cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses, and sweeping sea views, this small hamlet preserves the timeless character of rural Italian life while being surrounded by some of the most celebrated scenery in the Mediterranean. Historically, Torca’s origins trace back to ancient times, with influences from Greek settlers and Roman development still visible in the region’s architecture, traditions, and agricultural practices. Like many villages along the Amalfi and Sorrento coasts, Torca grew around its parish church, the Church of San Tommaso Apostolo, which remains the spiritual and cultural heart of the community. The church’s bell tower rises above the cluster of homes, symbolizing the strong sense of continuity and belonging that defines village life.
Torca is also a gateway to nature. The area is surrounded by lush olive groves, lemon orchards, and terraced vineyards that cascade toward the sea. It is particularly well known among hikers and outdoor enthusiasts as the starting point for trails that wind through the Punta Campanella Marine Reserve, a protected area rich in wildlife and myth. One of the most popular routes is the path leading to Crapolla Fjord, a dramatic cove where ruins of a Roman villa and an ancient chapel overlook turquoise waters. For visitors, Torca combines tranquillity with authenticity. Its family-run trattorias serve traditional Campanian dishes, often featuring freshly caught seafood and local produce. While quieter than its famous neighbours, Torca offers an immersive experience of the Sorrento Peninsula’s beauty, culture, and hospitality—making it a hidden gem for travellers seeking a genuine connection to Italy’s coastal heritage.
