Villa Taranto Botanical Gardens

Villa Taranto Botanical Gardens, located in Verbania on the western shore of Lake Maggiore in northern Italy, is one of Europe’s most celebrated and diverse botanical gardens. Covering an area of about sixteen hectares, the gardens offer a magnificent fusion of natural beauty, artistic design, and scientific precision. Founded by Scottish nobleman Captain Neil Boyd McEacharn in 1931, Villa Taranto was created out of his passion for botany and his vision to transform a wild, untamed piece of land into a living museum of plants from every corner of the world.

Captain McEacharn devoted his life to collecting and cultivating rare and exotic plants, importing species from five continents to create a truly international garden. Today, Villa Taranto hosts more than twenty thousand varieties of plants and trees, including azaleas, rhododendrons, magnolias, camellias, lotus flowers, and an extraordinary collection of ferns. The gardens are arranged in a series of terraces, ponds, fountains, and tree-lined avenues, designed to highlight the natural forms and colours of each plant while maintaining harmony with the surrounding landscape of Lake Maggiore and the nearby Alps.

Every season brings new beauty to Villa Taranto. In spring, tulips paint the garden with a sea of colour during the famous Tulip Week, an event that attracts visitors from all over the world. Summer offers lush green vistas and the blooming of water lilies and tropical plants in the greenhouses and aquatic gardens. Autumn transforms the park into a golden tapestry of foliage, while winter reveals the elegant structure of the landscape and the evergreen species that give the garden its year-round charm.
