Passeggiata del Lisippo
Stretching gracefully over the breakwater that shelters the Marina dei Cesari in Fano, the Passeggiata del Lisippo unfolds as one of the longest scenic sea promenades along the Adriatic coast. Spanning nearly a kilometre, this elevated pathway invites both pedestrians and cyclists to enjoy tranquil strolls or cycling journeys with stunning sea vistas to one side and the lively marina to the other.
The promenade culminates in a striking symbol: a bronze statue of a victorious athlete, an evocative reproduction crafted by local artist Paolo Furlani. Donated by the Lions Club in 2009, this figure emulates the celebrated “Atleta di Fano,” a rare bronze statue attributed to the ancient Greek sculptor Lysippos, originally discovered off Fano’s coast in 1964. According to local folklore, touching the statue’s more… private areas is said to bring good fortune, so much so that wear is visible there, a quirky testament to its popularity.
Art and community have further enriched the promenade. In 2017, a vibrant stretch of 400 meters was transformed by murals painted by students from Fano’s Olivetti and Seneca institutes. Inspired by the theme “Horizon,” the murals span the sea-facing wall and bring colour, imagination, and youthful creativity to the walkway. Additionally, five sea-facing terraces equipped with dual-sided benches were added to the structure, offering places to rest and admire the dynamic interplay of sea and harbour.
Recet redevelopment efforts have made the entrance to the promenade more accessible and visually engaging, featuring new contemporary furnishings, lighting, and a refreshed paved surface. These improvements aim to reinforce the sense of communal belonging while honouring both the past and future of this cherished public space .
Visitors and locals alike appreciate the promenade’s serene yet lively ambiance. Many recommend catching the sunset here, the boats, the lighthouse, and the soft glow of dusk reflect magically off the water, making it feel as though you’re walking “floating in the middle of the sea”.
