Located in Bardolino’s historic centre on Piazza Giacomo Matteotti, the Chiesa di San Nicolò e San Severo stands as the town’s parish church and a striking example of neoclassical architecture blending with centuries of local history. The original church dedicated to Saint Nicholas dates back to the 12th century and is traditionally believed to have been consecrated on July 15, 1185 by Pope Lucius III, though official documents date the earliest record to 1223. It served as a chapel dependent on the parish of Santa Maria di Garda and gained full parish status before 1460. By the early 19th century, the old Romanesque structure no longer met local needs and was demolished between 1830 and 1844. Across the same footprint, architect Bartolomeo Giuliari designed a larger, Palladian‐inspired neoclassical church. A monumental pronaos with Corinthian columns was added by 1880 to complete the façade.
