Mestre Railway Station
Mestre Railway Station (Stazione di Venezia Mestre) is a crucial transportation hub located on the mainland of Venice, Italy. Serving as a major junction between northern Italian cities and the Venetian Lagoon, the station is one of the busiest in the Veneto region. It connects high-speed trains (Frecciarossa, Italo), regional lines, and international services, making it an essential stop for travellers heading to Venice, Verona, Milan, or even Austria and Slovenia. Its strategic position, just across the bridge from the historic island of Venice which makes it makes Mestre an ideal base for visitors looking for more affordable accommodations without sacrificing accessibility to the city’s iconic canals and landmarks.
Mestre Station is well-equipped with modern facilities, including shops, ticket offices, restrooms, and easy access to local buses and trams. Many tourists who prefer to avoid the high prices and luggage restrictions of Venice’s pedestrian-only layout choose to stay in Mestre and commute into Venice Island, which is only about 10 minutes away by train. Trains to Venezia Santa Lucia (the station located directly on Venice Island) run frequently throughout the day, making the transition smooth and efficient.
When traveling to and from Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE), Mestre Railway Station is a logical and convenient link. The airport is located roughly 10 kilometres northeast of Mestre and is well connected by several transportation options. The most direct and cost-effective route is via bus. ACTV and ATVO operate regular express buses that run between Mestre Station and the airport, with journey times averaging 20–25 minutes. These buses run frequently, even early in the morning and late at night, and are designed to accommodate luggage, offering a comfortable ride.
Taxis are another option, taking around 15–20 minutes depending on traffic, though they are more expensive. Ride-sharing apps and private transfers are also widely available and may offer additional convenience, especially for travellers with heavy luggage or tight schedules.
For a scenic but less direct route, water taxis and Alilaguna boats are accessible from Venice Island, though this typically requires transferring from Mestre to Santa Lucia first. Overall, Mestre Station provides a central and well-connected gateway for exploring Venice and the surrounding region, especially when combined with the efficient transport options to and from Marco Polo Airport.
